Politeness is
To do and say,
The kindest things,
In the kindest way.

Okay, we really do not bake that often. So, my little helper Cora and I thought we would try Walnut Glory Cake. I can sure get confused reading a recipe. It says combine dry ingredients. Isn't sugar dry? Then, it says beat egg whites and gradually add sugar. AAAAAH. Then it says combine egg yolks, vanilla, and sugar.... WHAT!!!!
Well, I just added sugar all over!! Then, Cora said what about chocolate. So, we added chocolate too! Well, the results were not too bad. Tod called it heavy. But, everyone ate it.

Tortillas
Okay, So I tried to tackle tortillas again. My little helper, Cora, was at my side. Here is how are conversation went.
-Is this from her book. (Grandma Gertie's book.)
- Yes.
- Boy, she knew how to make a lot of stuff. She was talented too. I'm very talented. I have so many talents, I don't know what to do.
-What are your talents.
-Singing, dancing, art. And, I'm an excellent soccer player. Oh, and exercising too.
-What about cooking.
-Well, I'm getting talented at cooking.
I'm glad she is confident. Cora thought our tortillas were delicious. Tod, thought they were galletas. I think I want to try them again with a tablespoon more of lard and rolling pin.
OH, yeah. I don't have a rolling pin. So, we use Tod's meat mallot. Our tortillas came out a little thick. But, I do agree with Cora, they were tasty. I told her they could be gorditas.

Teenage Crazy Cake
I have read through page 12. Lots of interesting words. Here is the intro -
Poems & Stories
Lovewords & Hopethoughts
Dreams
Insights to Grow on
&
Reflections on the Wonders
of the World
Lovewords and hopethoughts - hmmmmmm.
The book is dedicated to her grandaughters and the young homemakers. I have another blog to write on the dedication later.
"Women that can cook from scratch will well survive: "depression, recession, inflation" by Pam Perea Casias.
Wow, mom! Well, I tried the first from scratch recipe today. I made Teenage Crazy Cake. The first recipe in the book. But, I followed the philosophy of the poem on page 11, "She didn't have potatoes...." I made a few substitutions. I couldn't find the Cocoa, so I used hot chocolate. I only had imitation vanilla. But, it still came out very moist and tasty. Cora did the stirring and helped with the icing.
At first, Cora said, "It looks like a caveman cake."
As we were eating, I got the kudos from the hubby and Lilly spread icing all over her face. I told the girls that this was the first recipe in Grandma Gertie's book and it tasted like something she would have made. Cora said, "It taste like something all Grandma Gerties would make."
Still, no home made tortillas.

Fantastic Flops and Super Successes
"You can always eat your mistakes."
No bread in the house. Get out grandma's book for the tortilla recipe. I'm shamed to say that I don't make them often enough to make them by heart. I need to work on the table of contents/ index for this book.
SPARK
How about a blog dedicated to my mom and grandma. A la Julia Childs movie blog. I can cook my way through this book and share my thoughts and memories. My husband would be happy because I would be cooking! I can get back into writing.
Please share with me your thoughts and memories about Grandma Gertie. I will try to post daily.
